IntelliShift's gateways, leverage the ability two types of technology that are the core of the gateways. These core components is a Cellular radio and a GPS receiver. We all at some time or another in our lives have experienced a loss of cellular or gps interference. Whether you were traveling in an area where cellular data was poor and you were unable to make a call, send an email, or navigate to an important website. If you were in your vehicle traveling where you had to drive through a tunnel, or under a bridge or through a major urban area with tall buildings, and you saw your navigation device jumping around or showing you in an area that you weren't physically at.
Reception Loss Types & Implications
There are 2 distinctive Losses of “reception”
- Cellular Reception Loss – The IntelliShift Gateways use cellular radios to transmit its captured data to the IntelliShift platform. The gateway technology is smart enough to store the data locally if cellular is unable to transmit the information due to Low or non-cellular areas.
- GPS Reception Loss – The IntelliShift Gateways utilize GPS technology to capture the physical location of where the gateway is. This information along with other information is transferred over the cellular network. When an asset loses GPS signal, we are not able to provide an updated location on the asset so the gateway will report the last reporting location.
This means that when we state that a device has lost GPS, we are stating that we have no known accurate location on the asset from the time it lost GPS until it had received GPS location again. While the device does not have GPS signal it can still transmit events such as Speed because this is provided from the ECM on your rolling vehicle fleet, or Ignition events as this is a data event itself.
Questions & Answers
Q:How to IntelliShift's Gateways leverage Cellular and GPS Technology?
A: IntelliShift's Gateways leverage the cellular network as a wireless bridge to transmit the sensor data captured on the asset to the IntelliShift Platform. These Gateways, utilize the Satellites orbiting the earth to provide position location for the gateway itself. this is the technology that captures the Latitude and Longitude data on where you asset is currently located.
Q: How Frequently does a IntelliShift Gateway Update?
A: People usually refer to the Update rate as how frequently will they receive an update on their asset. IntelliShift leverages Event based technology to provide instant transmission of the captured data at the gateway level to transmit it to the platform for viewing of its users. This means, that if a device captures an event, such as Movement, Ignition, Sensor points of the asset, diagnostic events and much more; it will be immediately transmitted to the IntelliShift Platform.
Q: What happens when an asset is in an area with no cellular service?
A: All of the IntelliShift Gateways leverage the Store and Forward method. This means that when an asset is in areas where cellular service is limited or not available, the gateway will store all of the information recorded, and transmit that information to the IntelliShift Platform as soon as it becomes available.
Q: How Accurate is GPS Technology?
A: IntelliShift Gateways capturing location using orbiting Satellites, will experience an accuracy on location about 2-3m(6-9ft) from the actual location of the asset.
Q: What are factors that can reduce the accuracy of GPS?
A: The most common occurrences, that affect GPS technology are Tall Buildings, Trees, Bridges, or Operating Inside, or underground.
Q: Why does an Asset show periodic GPS loss rather then GPS loss permanently?
A:The reason why GPS loss may be happening at specific times and not all times of the day is because GPS is not like a light switch where it either gets signal or it doesn’t. It is constantly searching and trying to acquire enough signal strength to be able to locate the gateway. That is why sometimes you have Location on the asset and other times where it is using a legacy location.
Q: What are some factors within the Asset that can attribute to poor GPS signal?
A: For proper GPS signal, it is important to refer to IntelliShift's Installation Documentation as it gives specifics to how to ensure that an gateway is properly mounted within the asset. Mounting position is the first part to ensuring proper GPS signal. Make sure that the device is mounted as high as possible within the asset, taking in to consideration that no metal is obstructing the line of sight to the Satellites. The second would be the orientation of the device itself. Some of the IntelliShift hardware should be mounted with the device label facing up towards the sky on a flat mounting surface.
