Overview
As a fleet leader, you need clear insights into fuel consumption to identify cost-saving opportunities and improve efficiency. With our Fuel and Energy Efficiency Report, you can now easily distinguish between fuel used for driving activities and wasteful idling. Additionally, this tool provides an accurate view of MPG directly from the engine, eliminating inaccuracies from fuel purchase records. This feature also allows you to compare the energy usage of electric vehicles against traditional fuel types, giving you a comprehensive picture of your fleet's energy consumption.
In this article, learn how to view report and about the data insights.

Prerequisites
Vehicle must be installed with IntelliShift's VG-800 Hardware or VG6 in order to populate the report.
View Fuel and Energy Efficiency Report
To view the Fuel and Energy Efficiency Report,
- In the left-hand navigation, select the "Analytics ” service module.
- In the top navigation, select "Reports."
- In the left-hand panel, select "Fuel Efficiency Beta" report under the "Fuel category.
Available Filters
On the right-hand side of the report, filters are available.
- Branch, Asset, Fuel Type
- Decide the top level hierarchy of the report. In other words, should assets be organized under branch or fuel type? Or, should individual assets display at the top level?
- Date Range
- Choose the date range.
- Start Time and End Time
- Choose the start and end time.
- Branches
- Choose to include assets within specific branches.
- Tags
- Choose to include assets with specific tags.
- Fuel Type
- Choose to include assets with specific fuel types.
- Only Show Non-PTO Idle Events
- Choose to exclude idle events in which PTO was engaged.
- Idle Threshold (In Minutes)
- Choose to only display idle events equal to or above a specific idle threshold.
- Please note, this filter will define fuel consumption for "idling" and "driving." For example, let's say the "Idle Threshold (In Minutes)" filter is set for 30 minutes. Any fuel consumption from idling equal to or above this threshold will be categorized into the "Fuel/Energy - Idle" category, whereas any fuel consumption for less than 30 minutes would be categorized into the "Fuel/Energy Consumption - Driving" category.
Available Data
Select the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner to view all data columns. Select and checkmark a column to display it within the report.
Available data columns include:
- Asset Type
- The asset type is displayed according to the asset's profile.
- To update the asset type, navigate to the article "View, Add, Edit, and Manage Asset List and Details."
- Fuel Type
- The fuel type is displayed according to the asset's profile.
- To update the asset fuel type, navigate to the article "View, Add, Edit, and Manage Asset List and Details."
- Fuel/Energy - Driving
- Displays the total consumption during driving segments. It does not include energy/fuel used during idling.
- Please note, this data column will categorize fuel consumption for driving as below the defined threshold in the Display Options filter "Idle Threshold (In Minutes)." Any fuel consumption equal to or more than the defined threshold will be categorized into "Fuel/Energy Consumption - Idling."
- For example, let's say the "Idle Threshold (In Minutes)" filter is set for 30 minutes. Any fuel consumption from idling equal to or above this threshold will be categorized into the "Fuel/Energy - Idle" category, whereas any fuel consumption for less than 30 minutes would be categorized into the "Fuel/Energy Consumption - Driving" category.
- Please note, this data column will categorize fuel consumption for driving as below the defined threshold in the Display Options filter "Idle Threshold (In Minutes)." Any fuel consumption equal to or more than the defined threshold will be categorized into "Fuel/Energy Consumption - Idling."
- Displays the total consumption during driving segments. It does not include energy/fuel used during idling.
- Fuel/Energy Consumption
- Displays the asset's total consumption. This is defined as the fuel consumption or energy usage for the asset for the time selected and includes driving time and idle time.
- Please Note: Some assets listed in the table may not consume or report on fuel and thus fuel consumption would report as "0." Fuel data comes from the ECM of the vehicle. If there is no ECM data or fuel data is not supported, then "Fuel Consumed" cannot be calculated or displayed.
- Fuel/Energy Consumption - Idle
- Displays the asset's fuel/energy usage from idling for the time selected.
- Please note, this data column will categorize fuel consumption for idling as equal to or above the defined threshold in the Display Options filter "Idle Threshold (In Minutes)." Any fuel consumption for less than the defined threshold will be categorized into "Fuel/Energy - Driving."
- For example, let's say the "Idle Threshold (In Minutes)" filter is set for 30 minutes. - Please note, this data column will categorize fuel consumption for idling as equal to or above the defined threshold in the Display Options filter "Idle Threshold (In Minutes)." Any fuel consumption for less than the defined threshold will be categorized into "Fuel/Energy - Driving."
- Displays the asset's fuel/energy usage from idling for the time selected.
- Fuel/Energy Efficiency
- Displays the total fuel burn / energy consumption. This includes fuel/energy used while idling.
- MPG: Calculated from engine fuel burn / miles driven
- Electric: MPGe - Calculated from Miles Driven / (Kilowatt-Hours Consumed) / 33.7. 33.7 is the conversion factor for Electric Energy to a Gallon of Gasoline
- CNG: MPGe - Calculated from Miles Driven / Lbs burned * 0.177) 1 Lb of CNG burned is equal to .177 Gallons of Gasoline
- Idle Rate
- Displays the idle consumption divided by idle time, using kWH to MPG conversions if needed to standardize on units GPH / GPHe.
- GPH: Calculated from engine fuel burn / Time Idling
- Electric: GPHe - Calculated from Time Idling / (Kilowatt-Hours Consumed) / 33.7. 33.7 is the conversion factor for Electric Energy to a Gallon of Gasoline
- CNG: GPHe - Calculated from Time Idling / Lbs burned * 0.177) 1 Lb of CNG burned is equal to .177 Gallons of Gasoline
- Displays the idle consumption divided by idle time, using kWH to MPG conversions if needed to standardize on units GPH / GPHe.
- Miles Driven
- Total asset miles driven for the given date
- Total Driving Time
- Total asset driving time for the given date
- Total Idle Time
- Total asset idle time* for the given date
- *Please note, idle will include PTO + Non-PTO time unless filters has "Only Show Non-PTO Idle Events" checked.
Please note: Some assets listed in the table may not consume or report on fuel and thus fuel consumption would report as "0." Fuel data comes from the ECM of the vehicle. If there is no ECM data or fuel data is not supported, then "Fuel Consumed" cannot be calculated or displayed.
For Example, trailers do not consume fuel. Filtering by branch, tags (if you have tags for asset type), or fuel type may build greater transparency. Viewing the "Asset Type" column may also help.
